Mysterious Bigfoot-Like Creature Reported at Myles Standish State Forest
Plymouth, MA – Residents and visitors at Myles Standish State Forest are buzzing after multiple reports of a towering, ape-like creature spotted lurking in the dense woods. The alleged sightings have sparked intrigue, skepticism, and a wave of curiosity among locals, with some calling it the “Plymouth Bigfoot.”
Eyewitness Accounts Describe a Hairy, Bipedal Beast
The first reported encounter came late last week when hiker Mark Dunlap, a Plymouth resident, claims he saw a massive, dark-haired figure standing near the edge of the forest.
“I was walking near Charge Pond when I heard heavy rustling in the bushes,” Dunlap recalled. “I turned and saw this huge, hairy thing—at least seven feet tall—just standing there, staring. It looked straight at me for a few seconds before bolting into the trees. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Dunlap’s story was initially met with disbelief, but similar reports soon surfaced. A group of campers staying near Fearing Pond reported hearing unnerving howls and finding large, human-like footprints near their site. Another witness, jogger Sarah Reynolds, described a fleeting glimpse of a “hulking, ape-man” crossing a trail at dusk.
“I thought it was a bear at first, but it was standing on two legs and moving way too fast,” Reynolds said. “It vanished before I could get my phone out.”
A History of Cryptid Sightings in New England
While Bigfoot—also known as Sasquatch—is most commonly associated with the Pacific Northwest, New England has its own history of mysterious creature reports. The region’s dense forests and rural landscapes have long been a hotspot for cryptid lore, including the “Bridgewater Triangle,” a paranormal zone in southeastern Massachusetts where strange sightings—from UFOs to phantom animals—are frequent.
Local cryptozoologist Dr. Paul Henderson, who has studied unexplained animal sightings for decades, says the descriptions match those of similar encounters elsewhere.
“The reports describe a large, bipedal primate with dark fur, which aligns with classic Sasquatch sightings,” Henderson said. “While skeptics will dismiss this as misidentified bears or hoaxes, the consistency in these accounts is intriguing.”

Skeptics Weigh In: Could It Be a Bear or Hoax?
Not everyone is convinced. Wildlife experts suggest that black bears—common in the area—could be mistaken for something more mysterious, especially in low light.
“A bear standing on its hind legs can look remarkably human-like from a distance,” explained state biologist Karen Wright. “Add in shadows, adrenaline, and an active imagination, and you get these kinds of misidentifications.”
Local officials have not yet commented on the reports, but park rangers have encouraged visitors to remain cautious and avoid approaching any large wildlife.
Bigfoot Hunters and Curious Locals Flock to the Forest
The rumors have attracted amateur investigators, paranormal enthusiasts, and even a few reality TV crews. Social media is abuzz with theories, blurry photos, and alleged trail cam footage—though none have been verified.
Plymouth resident Greg Marino, a self-proclaimed “Bigfoot chaser,” has organized nightly expeditions to track the creature.
“We’ve set up cameras and audio recorders near where the sightings happened,” Marino said. “If there’s something out here, we’ll find it.”
Could This Become a Local Legend?
Whether the sightings are real or a case of collective imagination, the “Plymouth Bigfoot” is quickly becoming part of local folklore. Some longtime residents recall whispered tales of a “wild man” in the woods dating back decades.
“My grandfather used to tell stories about trappers seeing a giant, hairy thing back in the ’50s,” said retired teacher Diane Cole. “Most people laughed, but he swore it was real.”
As investigations continue, one thing is certain: Myles Standish State Forest just got a lot more mysterious.
