🐦 Rare Roseate Spoonbill Sighting in Marshfield
People flock to Marshfield to get glimpse of rare pink bird
A roseate spoonbill — a striking pink wading bird rarely seen this far north — was spotted in Marshfield this week, drawing birdwatchers from across the region to try and catch a glimpse. The bird was first observed near the Brant Rock Town Pier and Green Harbor marshes, unusual habitat for this species, which normally lives in southern states like Florida and the Carolinas.
Experts say the spoonbill likely ended up in Massachusetts after being displaced by recent stormy weather, leaving locals and visiting birders excited about the uncommon sighting. This marks only the second documented sighting of a roseate spoonbill in Massachusetts and the first in Plymouth County.
Birdwatchers were especially thrilled to see the bird foraging in shallow water, using its flat, spoon-shaped bill to feed — a behavior that makes it stand out among local wildlife.
