An accidental gas explosion occurred in Onset, Massachusetts on July 18, 1946. It killed nine people and injured at least 60, according to The New York Times and Wicked Local.

The explosion demolished four buildings in the center of the resort town and damaged two others beyond repair. It also shattered windows three blocks away and caused widespread injuries from flying debris.

The explosion originated in the basement of Christy's Spa, a restaurant that also housed a fish and chips shop, two fruit and produce stores, and a gift shop. Escaping butane gas was detected earlier that day, and the fire and police departments and the Buzzards Bay Gas Company were called to the scene. The gas was traced to the basement, and customers were evacuated.&nbsp;

According to a subsequent inquest report, the explosion was caused by a plumber, Cecil Barrett, who accidentally broke a high-pressure gas line while working in the basement, releasing a large quantity of gas. The Buzzards Bay Gas Company was also criticized for its slow response to the emergency call. Although the leak was initially reported corrected and the area reopened, a gas pocket likely developed and was ignited by an unexplained source, possibly an electric motor.&nbsp;

The explosion resulted in a state of emergency being declared in Onset, which is part of Wareham. The National Guard was dispatched to the area, and emergency crews from surrounding towns assisted in the response. The scene was described as resembling a "battlefield dressing station", according to The New York Times.

The explosion had a devastating impact on the community, with many businesses destroyed and lives lost. The total damage was estimated at over $200,000, which is more than $2,750,000 in 2021 dollars. The area was eventually rebuilt, and the site where the explosion occurred is now home to the Onset Village Market.
